 What is Reading?

“Reading means looking at written words and understanding the message.”

Types of Readings are:

  •                 Skimming
  •                Scanning
  •                Extensive Reading
  •               Intensive Reading

1- Skimming:

Reading quickly to find the main points is called skimming. e.g. When we read news, in a newspaper, we don’t go into details instead our focus is on the main headings only. Or when we read an essay we read the main points of it.

2- Scanning:

Reading quickly to get specific information is called scanning. e.g. when we read a schedule of buses, we use rapid eye movement to find something, or when we see the merit lists.

3- Extensive Reading:

Reading for pleasure is called extensive reading e.g. reading novels, short stories, magazines,

4-  Intensive Reading:

Reading for detailed information is called intensive reading. e.g. reading texts, professional books, letters, etc.

What is Writing and its types?

“The act of writing text with exact words, spellings, and using grammar and punctuation.”

Types:

  •     Narrative
  •     Descriptive
  •  
      
    Exposing / Reflexive
  •   Argumentative

1-  Narrative:

The narration of some event or series of events is called narrative writing. E.g.

i- A visit to a fair

ii- A road accident

iii- A cricket match

2- Descriptive Writings:

The description of the place, person, thing, or scene is descriptive writing. E.g. My hero in history, History of pyramids, etc.

3- Exposing / Reflexive Writings:

The explanation of ideas, facts, processes, and arguments is called expository/reflective writing. e.g. sports and games, terrorism, overpopulation, corruption pollution.

4- Argumentative / Possessive Writings :

To bring other people around to your point of view is called argumentative writing. E.g. Letters of complaints, reviews, articles, and advertisements.
