What is Precis?
The word precis is derived form French word which means summary and precis writing means the art of summarizing , Thus the art of summarizing is also known as precis writing. Roughly speaking , it is an "abstract" or a "gist" of a longer passage or document. It is the main theme of the passage in concise form.
Definition of Precis According to Oxford Dictionary
" It is a short version of a speech or a piece of writing that gives the main points of ideas."
Definition of Precis According to Cambridge Dictionary
" Precis is a short form of text which briefly give only the important parts."
A precis must fulfill the following four requirements:-
- It must be in the form of a continuous narrative.
- It must not consist of disjointed sentences.
- It should include all the important ideas expressed in the original passage.
- It should rigidly exclude all that is unimportant and irrelevent.
